Ian Armstrong of Sony Recording Media comments on AIT and S-AIT tape
Sony have been at the forefront of data tape technology for many years. The development of Metal Evaporated (ME) tape technology, originally for professional video tape recording in the 1980's was pioneered and perfected by Sony to provide excellent picture quality for treasured recordings. Sony realised that the high recording density that could be attained with ME tape could be applied to data recording and so the AIT (Advanced Intelligent Tape) format was developed initially with 65GByte (25GB Native) capacity in AIT Generation 1 (AIT1).
A strong roadmap was also achieved with this format, now at Generation 5 (AIT5) being able to attain over 1TB of storage with a compression ratio of 2.6:1*.
Over the years many organisations have supported the AIT format - see www.aittape.com. Sony produces a range of tape drive and library solutions - predominantly to suit SMB and SME sectors.
Sony also developed the S-AIT - a ‘half inch tape' cartridge format similar to LTO - but offering greater reliability for Broadcast and Enterprise applications. Capacities for S-AIT1 are 1.3TB (500GB Native) and S-AIT2 at 2.0TB (800GB Native) achieved through the usage of Sony rack mountable and scalable (Petasite) solutions. This format is also supported by other manufacturers as per the above web address.
The Sony AIT product family now comprises:-
- SAIT1 500N - 500GB native / 1300GB compressed capacity
- SAIT2 800N - 800GB native / 2000GB compressed capacity
- SDX1 25C - AIT1 - 25GB native / 65GB compressed capacity
- SDX1 35C - AIT1 - 35GB native / 91GB compressed capacity
- SDX2 50C - AIT2 - 50GB native / 130GB compressed capacity
- SDX3 100C - AIT3 - 100GB native / 260GB compressed capacity
- SDX4 200C - AIT4 - 200GB native / 520GB compressed capacity
- SDX5 400C - AIT4 - 400GB native / 1040GB compressed capacity
